Welcome Address by Dr. A Shobhana, Secretary SFB

World Stroke Day2017(WSD) was observed on 29th October in a Seminar at FD Community Hall, Salt Lake City,Kolkata. A prior Hypertension(HTN) screening was done. All  participants were provided with a folder with Stroke Awareness Leaflets, WSD Poster, Brochure and latest Stroke Bulletin of SFB. In the welcome address Dr. A.Shobhana, Secretary,SFB, detailed how and why  World Stroke Day was formed  by World Stroke Organisation(WSO) in 2006,with a particular Theme each year. She explained the importance of this year’s Theme on Stroke Prevention in Indian context and urged all to know more about Risk Factors(RF) of stroke and its prevention. The Dignitaries included the Inaugurator, Prof.S.B.Dasgupta, President of Bangiyo Biswan Parishad, Prof.S.Pal, the Vice-Principal, Murshidabad Medical College, Dr. Samir Chowdhury, Secretary,

 Salt Lake Branch of IMA, and Mr.Biswajit Guha, the young Stroke Survivor. While Prof.Dasgupta emphasized on spreading the message of WSD across the country, Prof Pal stressed on Risks to Recognize and Reduce stroke incidence. She assured that she would take all initiative to run Hypertension and Diabetes  Clinics in the NCD Program of the Government in her College. Dr. Choudhury reiterated that IMA would continue to work jointly in all programs of Hypertension and Stroke, as before.

Mr. Guha 48 yrs, a stroke survivor since 2008, shared his painful and depressing experiences during his long journey of struggle for recovery to join his job. He advised all for Primary prevention esp to control HTN and other RFs. Two Caregivers – Dr.  Das (a Daughter) and Prof Pati(a Husband) shared their experiences how the whole pictures of the families suffered so abruptly after a

stroke. They recounted how they had endured such ordeals, and confessed they had no prior knowledge about stroke and its preventive RFs esp HTN. Prof. Dipes K Mandal, the President,SFB  stressed on stroke prevention, particularly in our subcontinent with second largest burden. So the “Stroke Riskometer app” is an apt app for Indian population (with 340 million smartphone users), and he requested all esp the Media people to spread the message of WSD and also  use of Riskometer app.

There were many personnel of media, and the local dailies carried the WSD activities in their issues the next day. There was good and lively interaction on stroke and its prevention. Next day, All  India Radio (AIR), Kolkata in  an hour long  live program on WSD as part of their Health Counselling Program -Swasthya Jigyasha(Query on Health), featuring Dr.A. Shobhana.  She advised all listeners to  know and control Risk factors esp HTN and Unhealthy Lifestyles. She urged the Smartphone users to use, free, Stroke Riskometer app to assess, prevent and predict stroke in next 5-10yrs. On Nov. 03, AIR once again aired the WSD messages of Prof.Dipes Mandal, Dr.A.Shobhana and Prof.S.B. Dasgupta in the program called “Niramoy” (Free from Diseases).

The Bolpur Branch of SFB organized a HTN Clinic and distributed leaflets and brochure of WSD. The participants were mostly women of rural, poor and also of tribal section of the surrounding areas, who  expressed keen interest about “Stroke Riskometer app” in Bengali.  Another event  was held on 10th November at the Glocal Hospital at Bolpur on  WSD 2017 with its medical, paramedical and other staff. The importance of Primary Prevention, Acute Care and Rehabilitation in a rural setting (including scope of Tele-Stroke) were explained by Prof. Mandal.
