In Bolpur,on 18th July in the evening, A special Seminar was arranged by the Rotary Club of Bolpur Santiniketan on Stroke Awareness involving Stroke Foundation of Bengal(SFB), in the context of World Brain Day – WBD- 2017 on July 22 .
Prof. Dipes K Mandal, Founder-President of SFB was specially invited to speak on the developments on Stroke Awareness around the world. Prof.Mandal initiated his talk with the recent developments in the regrouping of Stroke in the International Classification of Diseases – ICD 11, framed by the WHO, and highlighted the advantages of this placement of Stroke in group of the Diseases of the Nervous System. With this background, World Federation of Neurology in association with World Stroke Organisation has decided to observe this year’s WBD on July 22 with the theme :
“Stroke is a Brain Attack.. Prevent it, Treat it.”
Stroke is more preventable than treatable.
This has become more easy with the introduction of the recently developed “Stroke Riskometer app” (also available in Bengali script – edited by SFB for about 30 million Bengali speaking citizens of Bangladesh and Eastern India), to be downloaded by a Smartphone, available in almost all places of the countries. This theme is mainly directed to the global Stroke Awareness about Stroke – it’s Nature, Risk Factors, Prevention and Treatment including Care of Long term Post-Stroke Disability with Secondary Prevention, which is very much lacking in the developing countries including India. During short deliberation, emphasis was given on this issues including colossal loss of resources due to millions of death and post -stroke disabilities often prematurely.in developing countries More over the role of Stroke Support Organisation for the benefits of Patients and their Caregivers was mentioned as enough funds are necessary to take care of these patients for a long period.
The members appreciated the problems of Stroke in our communities and also the theme of WBD. More works and seminars have been assured by the President and the learned members of the Rotary Club, Bolpur Santiniketan Branch.
