24th June, 2009, marked the third anniversary of the Stroke Foundation Of Bengal (SFB ). This day was also observed as the World Stroke Day by the foundation, in collaboration with the Indian Stroke Association and the Indian Medical Association , Bengal branch. This program was endorsed by the World Stroke Organization.
This year’s program ,held at the majestic Rabindra Okakura Bhavan at Salt Lake City, Kolkata, began with a street rally,” Walk To Fight Stroke” which started from the Labony bus stand at Salt Lake and wound up at the venue. People from all walks of life participated in this march against stroke and lifestyle diseases, carrying banners conveying messages about the brain attack.
The function at the Rabindra Okakura Bhavan was inaugurated by the eminent physician and the President of the West Bengal Medical Council, Prof.Asoke.K.Chaudhuri, who elaborated the menace of lifestyle diseases and stroke in particular with a clear message to control the most important risk factor of stroke, that is, hypertension.This was followed by the release of year’s souvenir by Prof.Debesh Das, Hon’ble Minister In Charge, Dept of Information Technology, Govt. Of West Bengal.
” Stroke”, a small booklet on stroke was released by Dr. Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar,Hon’ble Member of Parliament, Govt. Of India.She spoke of a desire to establish a multispeciality hospital in her constituency where a stroke centre could be designed. Smt Rekha Goswami, Hon’ble Minister In Charge, Self Help Group and Self Employment, Govt. Of West Bengal, who has been a witness to the relentless activities of the foundation in spreading awareness of stroke among the general public, lauded the efforts of the foundation and wished it success in the future.
The founder president of SFB, Prof.Dipes Kumar Mandal, in his presidential address,highlighted the activities of the foundation in the last three years and expressed a plan to start training programs for stroke caregivers soon, with stress on rehabilitation, while the awareness programs will be intensified.The day concluded with an interactive session on various aspects of stroke and its management, between the audience and an expert panel featuring eminent neurologists,neurosurgeons,physicians,intensivists,radiologists and stroke rehabilitation consultants.
This program received widespread media coverage through All India Radio,Doordarshan, local cable networks, other newspapers and magazines.
The concluding vote of thanks was delivered by the joint secretary of SFB, Dr.A.Shobhana.
